Membership
All membership in the UDC is based on membership in a Chapter; admission is by Chapter invitation and completion of an approved membership application. A woman must be 16 years of age or older and a lineal (direct) or collateral (niece) blood descendant of an eligible Confederate ancestor. Women who are adopted are eligible only through the bloodline of a biological parent.

An eligible Confederate ancestor is defined as a man or woman who served in the Army, Navy, or Civil Service of the Confederate States of America or gave Material Aid to the Cause (e.g. nurse, scout, blockade runner, financial or other support to troops). The ancestor must have served honorably and must not have taken the Oath of Allegiance to the U.S. before April 9, 1865 (unless proof of service is provided).

Application and Proof of Eligibility
The membership application must be completed and must include acceptable documentation (proof) of names, dates, places, and kinship beginning with the applicant through the Confederate ancestor. Lineage documents acceptable as proof include birth, marriage, and death certificates; census, court, and church records; newspapers; and other authoritative sources.

Official records must be included to document the Confederate service. If Military Service, the official Confederate military service record must be submitted. If Civil Service or Material Aid, records that document the aid or service during the War period must be submitted.

Documents for the official record of Confederate service include the National Archives Compiled Service Records, military and pension records from the various state archives, and authoritative publications.

National Archives Compiled Service Records are for a fee from various locations, including:
National Archives and Records Administration, UDC Headquarters, and Broadfoot Publishing Company.
